About KINESIOLOGY (Kin-easy-ology)

What is Kinesiology?

The science of energy balance

Put simply, kinesiology is a non-invasive method using muscle feedback and body awareness that can assist you to reduce stress and pain and promote health and wellbeing.

(Click here for Dr Bruce Dewe’s description of Kinesiology)

KINESIOLOGY =

the science of energy balance

Kinesiology is the most holistic of all the natural therapies and, like traditional Maori medicine, recognises the importance of body, mind and spirit in health and healing.

Kinesiology enables people to detect and correct imbalances that relate to stress, nutrition, learning problems, minor injuries, and other issues they meet in their daily life. A non-invasive method, Kinesiology is grounded in the study of anatomy and physiology and uses muscles as monitors of stress and imbalance within the body.

A fundamental premise of kinesiology is that the body has innate healing energy and is always doing its best to care for itself, but sometimes needs to be helped into a better position to achieve this care.

Kinesiology recognises the flows of energy within the body do not only relate to the muscles but to every tissue and organ that make the body a living, feeling being.

Energy Flow

These energy flows can be evaluated by testing the function of the muscles, which in turn reflect the body’s overall state of structural, chemical, or emotional balance. In this way Kinesiology taps into energies that the more conventional modalities overlook.

Kinesiology looks beyond symptoms and does not treat named diseases nor does it diagnose them. Kinesiology is concerned with imbalances in the body’s energy. In this respect, kinesiology has close links with the acupuncture concept of energy flow.

Where, as the result of injury, emotional trauma, nutritional or other unresolved stress, the energy flow is interrupted, the whole body is affected: the exact nature of blockage in the energy flow can be more closely identified by muscle testing. Acupressure massage, light touch and other simple correction skills are used to restore muscle balance, which has a flow-on effect into total body energy.

Kinesiology is not limited to dealing with ailments. Energy balancing brings a person closer to achieving any goal of their choice - in sport, relationships, learning or coping with life generally.

Kinesiology Definitions

(Taken from Basic Kinesiology Practice 1.101. Written by Dr Bruce and Joan Dewe and ICPKP)

There are many different definitions of Kinesiology, here are a few of the main organisations related to Kinesiology.

Lay definition of Kinesiology as per Vision 2000 Leadership Conference:

Kinesiology: a non-invasive method using muscle feedback and body awareness, can help you reduce stress and pain; improve performance at school, work and home; in sports; in relationships; and promote health and well-being.

  1. Kinesiology is a communication tool that enables a person to assess and upgrade their performance in all areas of their life.
  2. Kinesiology is the science of energy balancing and is grounded in the study of anatomy and physiology. Kinesiology uses muscles as monitors of stress and imbalance within the body.
  3. Kinesiology enables people to detect and correct various imbalances that may relate to stress, nutrition, learning problems, minor injuries, and other issues they meet in their life.
  4. Kinesiology is the most holistic of all the natural health care system.

Australian Kinesiology Association:

Kinesiology encompasses holistic health disciplines that use the gentle art of muscle monitoring to access information about a person’s wellbeing. Originating in the 1970’s it combines western techniques and eastern wisdom to promote physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health.

Kinesiology identifies the elements which inhibit the body’s natural healing process – relieving pain, stress, muscular and nervous imbalances, detecting sensitivities and nutritional deficiencies.

Kinesiology assists with psychological and learning disabilities, stimulates natural internal energies and releases the untapped potential of the individual.

Kinesiology Schools Australia:

Kinesiology is a system of healthcare that emphasises health maintenance, client education and client responsibility and indentifies the causative influences triggering health imbalances.

History of Kinesiology

In the late 1960's an American Chiropractor by the name of Dr George Goodheart DC developed a new concept, in which he began to use muscle testing to evaluate muscle function, posture and general body imbalances.  He also discovered corrective measures for the evaluated dysfunctions, which led him to formulate what He called  "Applied Kinesiology". It was the study of how the body works, applying results against the traditional Chinese Medicine philosophies of Acupuncture and using "muscle testing" as a feedback process.

In the early 1970's another Chiropractor from California, Dr John Thie DC, met Dr Goodheart and studied with him in a small research group. Dr. John Thie had wonderful humanitarian insights and developed a simple, safe and very effective system for the lay-person, he called it "TOUCH FOR HEALTH".  Dr Thie began teaching this new "self-help program" to his patients. Many people from all over America came to study with Dr Thie and soon word had spread to Great Britain and other countries around the world.

Touch for Health

Touch For Health was introduced to Australia in 1979 when a small number of workshops were taught to interested people who at the time would most probably have been considered "alternative" or "fringe types".

Today Dentists, Chiropractors, Psychologists, Medical Doctors as well as Naturopaths, Homoeopaths, Sports Medicine Practitioners and massage therapists study side by side and use it in their clinics.

How kinesiology works

Kinesiology uses gentle muscle testing as a means of communicating with the brain (subconscious) to identify and correct imbalances and blockages in the body’s physical, mental, chemical and emotional systems for positive lasting results.

The body has innate healing energy and is at all times doing its best to care for itself, yet sometimes it requires assistance to get into a better position to achieve this care.

Kinesiology is the most comprehensive of the modern natural therapies. It is, however, very easy to learn some kinesiology techniques to boost your own energy or help you handle day-to-day stress situations.

Have you ever come in from shopping with tired feet, felt your energy at an all time low and wish you could get a quick energy boost? Try the walking gait reflexes for yourself and feel your energy rise.

(click here for more about walking gait reflexes).

Stressed out to the max? Hold your ESR points for 30 - 90 seconds and marvel like we did that a simple reflex from Chinese medicine can have such a profound effect.

(click here for more about using ESR points).

What can you expect?

Each session is individually tailored: by discussing your aims for the session and using muscle testing to determine the appropriate process.

Kinesiology is non invasive, and usually involves lying on a massage table fully clothed, with the shoes removed. The muscle in your forearm will be lightly manipulated to receive biofeedback. Alternative muscles can be used. At times leg muscles will be used, hence wearing comfortable pants is recommended.

Kinesiology experience

As we are all unique, each balance is experienced in different ways. Most clients feel more relaxed, have less physical pain and notice a positive change immediately; however, full integration can take up to several days.

While some people experience success within the first session, follow up session are often required to resolve long term or more in depth issues.

We recommend you allow for at least 3 sessions after which you can than review your requirements with your kinesiology consultant.

Even though Kinesiology assists in clearing stresses, it can also be used to keep your health and well being in balance as an ongoing maintenance program.

To keep your energy levels optimal, we recommend a ‘tune up” every 3-6 months.

Each session will provide you with new insights and awareness; empowering you to make positive changes in your life.
